In the biological sense, an animal, or human is one who has fully matured. In the context of humans adults have implications that are based on the legal and social world. Legally mature means that a person has reached the age of adulthood and is defined as an independent, self-sufficient person, and responsible. The word "major" can be applied to the person. The general consensus is that the age at which a person becomes a legal adult is 18. But, it can differ based on the legal rights and countries as well as psychological development.

The age of adulthood marks the point in the human lifespan when an individual has reached maturity both in mental and physical development. Adulthood is commonly thought of as beginning at age 20 or 21 years. Following middle age (starting around age 40) is the time to reach old age (around the age of 60). Adulthood is divided into three distinct stages: young adulthood (18-mid-30s) and mid-30s to mid-60s then late adulthood from mid-60s up to the time of death. As we enter early adulthood the body is at the fullest physical maturation. But, the height and our weight can rise. As we enter our early adulthood our physical capabilities are at their highest which includes the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed, sensory abilities, and heart function.
